![]() February 09, 2005Out of courtesy, I feel the need to inform my four-person readership about my feelings on the latest "blogosphere" Ward Churchill is a dirty, little, filthy, yucky thing. He deserves every ounce of humiliation that comes his way, however, I don't particularly care for all the attention he is getting. Since this professional agitator cannot bring anything of value to the world, the only validation to his existence comes from getting under people's skin. How else would someone of Ward Churchill's standing manage to get his face plastered all over CNN, Fox News, NBC, etc? Do you actually think his academic work enlightens people to American Indian and U.S. History? If instead of outrage we would have just laughed in his face, his modus operandi would have melted into a slimy, goo-like substance that matches his backbone. I understand it is completely insane for me to believe that his detractors could act with such collective zen, but sometimes absurdities need to be appropriately responded to in-kind. UPDATE: Here is a perfect example of how to respond "in-kind." Plus, Jeff gets bonus points for using another absurd story to tie into the absurdity of absurd Ward Churchill. This is a good time to plug my Christmas Wishlist for next year: a Theasaurus. Posted by 10 fingers 6 strings at February 9, 2005 01:08 PM | TrackBackComments
I agree with you to a degree, but the more I thought about this one, the more I think that this is a breakthrough case in getting the public to understand just how pathetic the Universities have become. Churchill's positions are not that far off from the standard positions of the Universities. They don't teach "American History" anymore, they teach courses that could more accurately be called "American Crimes". He is getting lots of airtime, and much of it has gone overboard, (such as O'Reilly's examination of whether he has committed treason) But I think this incident has really enlightened a lot of average Americans about the complete disconnect of the universities from reality. Posted by: Penraker at February 11, 2005 05:11 PMI can't argue with that at all. When I wrote that post a few days ago, it should have been more concentrated towards the more hysterical, knee-jerk reactions that came from guys like O'Reilly. Lately, I have seen several well-reasoned, substantive arguments for keeping this issue on the radar screen. It's not so much that he is a kook who hates America, but that he is a kook teaching at a prominant University who is supposed to have better understanding of actual history versus "I-hate-whitey-and-everything-he-did" history. I'll post an update. Posted by: Ten Fingers 6 Strings at February 11, 2005 07:18 PMPost a comment
