Making Music is Better Than Blogging

Cool! Are you using Protools on your mini-Mac?

To the other three TF6S.com readers, here is a taste of what Ian might be doing on the above site.

This summer, I have to figure out how to get my crap tunes on this blog in an efficient way without losing too much sound quality. I promise it will contain lots of passages where I play really high on the tiny string like, "meeledy, meeledy, meeledy, meeledy, meeledy, meeledy, meeledy, meeeeeeeeee!"

MOTU Digital Performer. Pro Tools has a Mercedes-like sheen to it, but Digital Performer is cheaper, just as robust IMHO, and works seamlessly with MOTU's digital interface hardware, which I'm also using. I didn't like Digidesign's lower-end interface/software combo, their mid-range stuff was more than I wanted to spend for what they offered, and their pro stuff was more than I wanted to spend, period.

Now, I just have to put some "product" up on the new site...after I, uh, actually make said product. I think I made the Ovoid cartoon two years ago, and haven't done much since, so clearly I need to speed up production.

I'm a big fan of Digital Performer. Back in the day of digital's infancy I was fortunate enough to intern at a studio where I learned Protools (actually, I spent most of my time making coffee and picking up laundry), but I have used DP and completely agree with you on its capabilities at the mid-range end. Add in a little talent on the engineering end and I would challenge anyone to try and tell the difference.

Don't worry about production output. My site is named "Ten Finger 6 Strings" and I haven't even produced one lick yet! I need to figure out how to do that before the summer is over though...
