Coldplay Still Sucks

Is this serious? U2? I need an official ruling on this from Anthony, as I have a hard time reading the U2 comparison without laughing.

Then again, consider the source, it was run in Newsweek.

Chris Martin, of whom I am a BIG fan, had this to say about his legend in the making:

Martin has never been shy about his belief that he's in "the best band in the world," and "X&Y" is a conscious effort to seize that title by force. "You want to be able to hold your head up high in a room with McCartney and Bono. That's one of the main things that drives me," says the singer, 28. "Are we trying to get to the next level? Yes. We're trying to get to the very highest level. We want to be better than Mozart. That doesn't mean we are, but that's what we're trying for. To me, there's no point in trying for anything less."

I see, you're kind of a cross between McCartney, Bono and Mozart--a McBonzart. Lines intertwining with lines. It's such a fine line between clever and stupid.

Anyway, I found this article via Beautiful Atrocities "Outside Reading List." Thanks Jeff, now I'm steamed...hurrumph..

But I like their music...

You get a free pass on this one, since you're an A's fan.

But my torment remains...

I always liked the song Yellow. Then a couple of years ago they gave an electric performance on the Grammys that stopped the show, doing the song Politics. (A bit like Kanye West's electric performance this year)

I bust on Coldplay because they are one of those Venn diagram bands that is just interesting enough to pull the fringes of a bunch of musical tastes. That's to their credit, as that is MUCH easier said than done.

I just saw them at the Coachella Music Festival and they stunk up the stage. Kind of boring and Chris Martin takes himself way to seriously. I ending up leaving to go watch the Chemical Brothers instead.

The highlight of Coachella to me was Nine Inch Nails. I guess that puts my musical tastes/criticsms in better perspective.

It's that damn Gwyneth

Although I can fully understand why someone might call Coldplay's music insipid, I actually like their stuff.

But are they a great band? Uh, no. And as for being the next U2...dream on, Chrissie-boy.

Oh, and a very interesting interview with Bono here:

http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/chi-050521bono-transcript,1,4830080.story

He calls rock music "niche", pointing out that 70 percent of youth now listen to hip-hop.

Good point. And getting back to Coldplay: if rock is indeed a niche market these days, then Martin & co. hitting the big time would not be the achievement it once was.

I really like hip-hop though...Lyrics Born is one bad mofo...

Everything is done with a band, and his show in SF about a week ago was one of the most energetic and entertaining performances I've seen in a while.

Anyway, the Bono article is really good...the music industry isn't what it once was...

Wait, I sound like a crotchety old coot...

Jeff's right, I blame Gwyneth for it all..
