![]() September 01, 2005I'm With The ColossusThe Colossus is becoming a favorite stop for me. If he keeps saying things like this, I'll induct him into the TF6S of Hall of Fame. Unfortunately for the Colossus, the number of people reading this site are not exactly shutting down any servers, so being in the Hall of Fame here is like being inducted to the Bowling Hall of Fame. Anyway, here is the money quote: ...I was preparing a long, bitter post about how some of my fellow conservatives are losing perspective (Impeach Bush over Mexico! We're Spending Too Much! Leave the Party! Bush Not Doing Enough To Prevent Hurricanes!) and forgetting that we are in a war, but I thought better of posting it. After all, I don't attack my friends. Warning: This is more of a rallying cry than in-depth analysis, but I need to get it off my chest. I spend much of my time here defending Bush from, what I see as flippant attacks. This does not mean that I don't think that Bush has some severe shortcomings. However, I am unapologetic about the fact that when it comes to the most important issue in the world (fighting the war) he isn't perfect, but he's the best we have. Under no circumstances do I think it is constructive to cut him down to the point where we will find ourselves with a replacement President backed by the very organizations (moveon.org, International A.N.S.W.E.R., etc.) that have been actively resisting any attempts by the United States to win this thing. I am not surprised when I see most of the Left and far Right nit-picking the President, but it seems that it is now becoming vogue for a lot of people, mostly ideologues, to take every piece of bad-news, magnify it, and pin it on his chest. We are in a damn war. To think that we can just roll into a place and actively develop a liberal democracy just by the force of our will, or by switching to the latest armchair General supported tactic, is myopic, igrorant of history and, slightly racist. Our enemies are NOT a bunch of idiots. They may have different values, which are ultimately nihilistic and utterly inhuman, but they are extremely schrewd and undeniably willing to stand up to us in the interest of self-preservation. Given this fact, there is NO plan that we could have executed in the GWOT, which would have been risk and casualty free. Their strategy is to render us inept by internal quarrelling, and there is nothing that gets Americans quarrelling like a job that is not done perfectly. Short-sighted, self-interested and opportunistic politicians take advantage of set-backs to try and regain power. People jump on the bandwagon, good intentioned or not, and soon we are arguing over inane subjects instead of finding ways to fight the bastards that are trying to kill us. We have made a number of mistakes, but that is what happens when you enbark on an unprecedented quest. It isn't mistakes that kill you, it is the inability to get past one's narcissistic self-loathing, eat a little humble pie, and get up and hit back. Good thing we have a leadership in place right now that is, for the most part, capable of that. However, if our people at home continue to listen to ideologues who, by their very nature, are able to offer only unreasonable and ridiculous expectations, we might find ourselves at the bottom of a pile-on. I have been arguing on this site for the past year that we clearly have the upper hand in this struggle, however imperfect it may be, and it will take a majority of us here at home, who are committed to slugging this thing out, to win. Unfortunately, when you tell Americans that they are going to have to wait at least 40 years to see it through, people start to panic and head for the doors. I'm staying put and I hope I can convince at least a few people along the way to stand with me. Posted by 10 fingers 6 strings at September 1, 2005 12:01 PM | TrackBackComments
Thanks, 10F6S. Consider all the mistakes Lincoln made in the Civil War -- or Roosevelt in WW II. Could a President today sustain a Fredericksburg, a Kasserine Pass, a fall of the Philippines? Mr. Lincoln murdered our boys! Mr. Roosevelt, where was the plan? Makes me long for the suspension of Habeas Corpus and active DoD censorship of the major media. (Kidding). The thing people are forgetting is that perfection is not a reasonable standard. Bush has plenty of flaws, has made plenty of mistakes. No doubt. But for God's sake people, will you let the man drive? You'll get a chance to name his successor at the next election. And that successor isn't going to be perfect, either. I'm just hoping, whoever it is, htey aren't an unmitigated disaster. Posted by: The Colossus at September 1, 2005 12:11 PMBy the way, via Goldstein, I came to the Bill Quick vs. Steven Den Beste argument on Daily Pundit. I liked his reaction to your comment . . . speaking of meltdowns. His comments to you were uncalled for. I'm with Den Beste's position in that whole discussion. I think he's got it right. I love these guys who talk about being Jacksonians -- but when it comes down to it, do they really have the stomach for the Trail of Tears? I suspect not. I was an infantry officer -- though I never saw combat -- and my feeling is that there is such a thing as proportionate response. No need to use nukes and genocide as the first tool out of the box, certainly. Thanks for the back-up. It isn't often that you are colorfully told by a fairly prominent blogger to stick it in your ear. You can imagine my shock when I read his response. Granted, I was trying to get under his skin a little as I felt he needed to lighten up, (he's always been the excitable type), however I thought that I'd commented enough over there in the past year to establish some level of understanding with him. Guess not. I think his response was more reflective of him than me, and I can only hope that most people who read it feel the same way. Anyway, my days over at Daily Pundit are pretty much finished (not that this "gnat" will be missed). But for the fact that Den Beste posts there, the place would have almost no value to me.
