http://www.colossusblog.com/mt/archives/000586.html Posted by: The Colossus at September 9, 2005 12:04 PMAs a lifelong Mets fan from a New England family of Red Sox fans, I can tell you that 1986 was both heartache and celebration for me. I was lucky enough to have my grandfather in our home during this series and we bickered and fought, laughed and cried back and forth through this series. He died a couple years later and I will always have fond memories and a bitter aftertaste from this series. I was happy my Mets won, but saddened for my family of Sox fans and the Sox nation in general. Bill Buckner was a great player and it's terrible his career has been defined by one moment. Posted by: Mixed Humor at September 12, 2005 04:38 PMIt was truly a great series. Did you ever read the book, "The Bad Guys Won"? It is a story of that chronicles the insides of the '86 Mets. There's actually an entire chapter on Bill Buckner. It is an amazing page turner that you can probably read in about 2 hours. Definitely a must for Mets fans. Posted by: TF6S at September 12, 2005 08:07 PMI haven't read that one...thanks for the suggestion, might have to check into it. That season I probably watched 135 of the Mets games on WOR-TV (we got in via cable) and I was totally invested into their team and followed every box score, at bat and inning pitched. The Mets did have the best team in 1986, I think they won 112 games or something. Great pitching staff (Gooden, Darling, Ojeda, etc), Good power hitting (Strawberry, Foster, Carter), Clutch Hitting (Keith Hernandez, Ray Knight, Howard Johnson) and the sparkplugs (Dykstra, Wilson, Backman). My most memorable season ever, still have the newspapers and magazines in my Mets memorabilia collection. I've been to Cooperstown 4 times and always end up dropping a few hundred bucks there on Mets memorabilia. Naturally my son is a Red Sox fan like the rest of the family...guess I'm the black sheep, lol. Thanks for kicking up those memories again, even if for only a few minutes. Posted by: Mixed Humor at September 12, 2005 11:34 PMWOR! If it wasn't for them, I don't think that half of the Mets fan base would exist! When we moved from Northern New Jersey to Arizona, we still got Mets games (and really bad movies) on WOR. I'd say it's pretty hard to be a Mets fan right now, so I don't think they have much appeal to the younger generation. Especially one who lives closer to Boston! Although, as a Mets fan, for the first time in a long time, they have a GM that isn't willing to trade the farm away for the latest Jonny-Come-Lately (Viola, Samuel, Bonilla, Vaughn). They have some young guys to build around. We'll see.... Posted by: TF6S at September 13, 2005 08:29 AMPost a comment
