More about Luna Moths

Most of the time, a particular female Luna Moth will lay eggs. These are all going to happen on the bottom leaves of Black Walnut. This is a chance for them to lay about 200 eggs even just in small groups. This may also occur. It is easy to tell what a male moth is, and a female moth is. They come in distinct forms. For instance, males may appear to have larger, and even busher atennas. This is way different from that of the female  moths. This is just one of the differences. There may still be  many.

For instance, the eggs are laid already; it would somehow take 10 days in order for such to hatch. When the eggs were left, there is a possibility for them to be eaten by caterpillars. And then, the leaves might be eaten too. This will happen from many shrubs and trees that include Red Maple, Sweetgum, White Oak, Hickories, American Beech, and willows, Black Cherry, Smooth Sumac and even the American chestnut. This has been the known process so it would still be very evident.

After a while, the caterpillars will somehow continue to grow and they will eat. They will molt their skins as well in the process of growing. This will be done for like five times and it may be observed over a period of weeks, maximum of three. For instance, the caterpillar has grown fully already, it may be of like 2 and ½ inches long and it may be ready enough to turn into pupa. This is also going to spin silk coming near its mouth. Afterwards, it will be wrapping itself with the use of a leaf. The caterpillar will have to stay there and it will be known as the cocoon. This will occur for like two, to three weeks. If it is near winter already, the caterpillar is most likely to wait as spring happens. This is the usual process.

The moment the adult moth left the cocoon, it will not yet be ready to fly, contrary to what others believe. This is the case because the wings are still short and they may still be stumpy. The insect will be needing rest in such case. This will hatch anyway in middle of the morning. It will climb a tree trunk in order for wings to be hanged. These are all possibilities that many individuals should be open to.
